A monument to Prince Alexander Nevsky will be installed in Vitebsk within the next two years, Chairman of the Vitebsk City Hall Viktor Nikolaikin said at the meeting of the Vitebsk Oblast Executive Committee which discussed the state program to promote tourism in Vitebsk Oblast on 26 March, BelTA has learned.
In order to make the city more attractive for tourists we need to fulfill several conditions, and create more interesting objects, the Vitebsk mayor stressed. “We have been working on the restoration of the historical and cultural heritage of the city. The reconstructed Holy Assumption Cathedral and the Church of the Resurrection have become real gems of the city. Last year, we installed a monument to the founder of Vitebsk castles Prince Alhierd. Work is underway on the construction of a monument to Prince Alexander Nevsky. We are planning to finish the construction this or next year and I am sure it will become another tourist attraction of the city," said the Mayor of Vitebsk.
Viktor Nikolaikin also noted that renovations on the buildings in Pravdy Street are slated to be complete this year. The building will house a museum of the history of the Vitebsk art school. Speaking about the project to create a Mark Chagall city quarter in Pokrovskaya Street, he said that the project has not been started yet because there is no investor while the amount of required investments is big.
“To promote tourism we need to improve the services sector (accommodation, catering and leisure), and advertising (availability and variety of information about the city and its tourism opportunities). The city is working on this too,” Viktor Nikolaikin assured.
