The railway does not forgive mistakes!

The railway does not forgive mistakes!

Railways are a source of increased danger! However, not all citizens observe personal safety measures and cross railway tracks wherever they please: in front of a moving train, under the wagons of a stationary train, and also walk along the railway track, including while listening to music with headphones. As a result, offenders create a real threat not only to their own lives but also to those of other citizens.

In the first 8 months of 2023, 1 person was injured on railway transport facilities in the district, compared to 0 citizens in the same period last year. There have been no fatalities on railway transport facilities in the Postavy district, either this year or last year.

For reference:

On 21.06.2023, at approximately 19:34, at kilometer 75, picket 3 of the Postavy-Lyntupy section, the driver of diesel train No. 6659, en route Krulevshchizna-Lyntupy, performed emergency braking to prevent hitting a person walking along the railway tracks. The collision could not be avoided.

The injured person was citizen "M", born in 1996, a resident of the Postavy district. The cause of the injury was the victim's disregard for personal safety measures while walking near railway tracks in an unauthorized location. The latter, due to the injuries sustained, was hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the Postavy Central District Hospital, having suffered severe bodily injuries.

Analyzing the situation in this area of activity, we conclude that pedestrians, for some reason, absolutely do not wish to comply with established safety rules. The main reason for citizens' deaths under the wheels of railway transport is the victims being in a state of alcoholic intoxication, as well as personal indiscipline when near a source of increased danger. This year, police officers conducted 5 comprehensive preventive measures at railway transport facilities, which contributed to maintaining stability in the situation at railway transport facilities located in the Postavy district.

Bringing people to administrative responsibility does not always have a sobering effect; people continue to neglect elementary personal safety rules when near railway transport facilities, often while in a state of alcoholic intoxication.

  • Violation of these rules entails administrative responsibility under Part 4 of Article 18.2 of the Code of the Republic of Belarus on Administrative Offenses (walking on railway tracks or being on railway tracks in places not intended for crossing them) in the form of a fine of up to two basic units.
  • Violation by a person driving a vehicle of the rules for crossing a railway crossing, according to Article 18.10 of the Code of the Republic of Belarus on Administrative Offenses, entails a fine of two to four basic units.

In this regard, I would like to remind everyone once again of the elementary personal safety measures when on railway transport facilities.

  • Pedestrians must cross railway tracks only in designated places, using pedestrian bridges, tunnels, and crossings.
  • Before crossing the tracks on a pedestrian crossing, it is necessary to ensure the absence of a moving train, locomotive, or wagons. When a train, locomotive, or wagons approach, one should stop, let them pass, and, after ensuring the absence of moving rolling stock on adjacent tracks, continue crossing.

Strictly prohibited:

  • Walking on railway tracks.
  • Crossing and running across railway tracks in front of an approaching train if the distance to it is less than 400 meters.
  • Crossing the tracks immediately after a train of one direction has passed, without ensuring the absence of a train of the opposite direction.
  • Crossing railway crossings when the barrier is closed or the traffic light of the crossing signaling shows a red signal.
  • At stations and sections, crawling under wagons and climbing over automatic couplers to cross the tracks.
  • Walking along the railway track closer than 5 meters from the outermost rail.
