Lukashenko expects new MPs to be proactive, stand up against opponents

Worthy representatives of the Belarusian people have been elected to the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus of the eighth convocation, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with the MPs of the House of Representatives and members of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus of the seventh convocation on 21 March, BelTA has learned.

Speaking about the new parliament, the head of state said: “There are many among them who have great experience in protecting state interests. They are able to significantly strengthen the role of Parliament in the consolidation of all patriotic forces of our society.”

According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, there are 70 members of four political parties among the elected MPs: “This is an opportunity for them to reveal their potential at a new level. Representatives of all political forces should interact constructively in the parliament.”

According to the head of state, it is important that there is someone to ensure continuity and pass on the accumulated legislative and political experience: 20 MPs of the outgoing convocation have been reelected.

“It is very important that the elected MPs are active, that their voice becomes authoritative. They should represent Belarus with dignity behind the parliamentary rostrum, in the media, outside the country and give a tough response to our opponents and adversaries,” the Belarusian leader said. “Many MPs and senators of the outgoing convocation should become an example for the newly elected National Assembly.”.

Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed that the newly elected MPs will work during the country’s most important social and political campaign - the presidential election in 2025. “It is already obvious that we will continue to be tested in this difficult time. It is important to realize that the people's elected representatives have a special responsibility to consolidate society and maintain civil peace and harmony,” the president said.

He emphasized that the MPs, whose powers are expiring, would not be left out of the common cause. “I am absolutely sure that there are no former MPs and senators. This is an obvious, immutable truth. All of you have passed a good school, working in the National Assembly. Your experience, knowledge, readiness to selflessly serve the interests of the Motherland will definitely be demanded by the state. Besides, you will always find my support in your good endeavors,” the head of state said.

In conclusion, he once again thanked the MPs of both chambers of the National Assembly for their fruitful work for the benefit of Belarus. “Your main merit as representatives of your constituents is that you have helped to preserve stability and peace in Belarus. Today we have realized that this is the most important abiding value of any nation,” the Belarusian leader said.
