Construction to break ground for waste sorting plant near Minsk in spring

The construction of a new waste sorting plant at the Trostenetsky landfill near Minsk is planned to start in the spring. The project was discussed at a working meeting chaired by Minsk Mayor Vladimir Kukharev on 30 January, BelTA has learned.

The facility will sort mixed solid municipal waste (up to 600,000 tonnes per year), including separately collected (up to 30,000 tonnes per year), and produce secondary material resources. It is also expected to produce RDF fuel (up to 114,000 tonnes per year).

According to Director of Belkommunproekt Institute Denis Drapei, the institute is currently evaluating the project. Plans are in place to install additional conveyors to increase the capacity of the current line of the Ecores company, to build a new production building, a boiler house running on wood chips from waste with a back-up electric boiler, to build a drying plant for RDF fuel, warehouses for storage of secondary resources, etc. It has been decided to abandon a composting site at this stage, but the site has been reserved in order to continue construction if necessary.

"To reduce costs, we have decided to combine production and domestic wastewater, rainwater drainage networks and leachate from the RDF fuel drying plant with the planned third stage of the landfill," Denis Drapei said.

In a month's time, Belkommunproekt Institute expects to receive the first specifications from the supplier of the technological equipment.

"Once the project is completed, the waste recycling rate will exceed 45%," Denis Drapei noted.

The customer for the project is the Gordorstroy municipal engineering company.

Vladimir Kukharev instructed to start preparing the site so that construction could begin as soon as the project study was completed. "We should draw up schedules, spell out the order of works and select contractors," the Minsk mayor noted.
