In January-May 2022, the Republic of Belarus saw a decrease in the number of road accidents involving children from 146 to 116, fatalities from 7 to 6, and injuries from 152 to 119 among minors. However, in May alone, 48 minors were injured across the country. A challenging situation with child road traffic injuries also developed in the Vitebsk region, where 1 child, a moped driver, died. No road accidents involving children were reported in the Lepel district.
Due to driver fault, 78 out of 116 children were injured; more than half — 59 minor road users — sustained injuries as pedestrians. 44 children were injured as passengers, every second minor passenger was transported in violation of established rules, and 17 injured children were riding bicycles.
The period marking the start of summer school holidays is traditionally characterized by a number of threats to child safety on the road. One of the main risks is the increased activity of transporting children from recreation areas by private transport and as part of organized groups by buses. An equally important circumstance is the large amount of free time children have, as well as a lack of adult supervision.
