Bicycle theft prevention
This year, the Department of Internal Affairs of the Postavy District Executive Committee continues to carry out preventive measures to prevent bicycle thefts in the city of Postavy and Postavy District. In accordance with the plan of main activities, preventive talks are held with citizens, postal employees, shop workers, and social workers, during which they are informed about ways to protect themselves from criminal encroachments, including ways to prevent bicycle thefts. The requirements of the District Department of Internal Affairs regarding the need to inform the police about every fact of illegal actions against citizens are also explained.
In Postavy District in 2019, compared to 2018, there was an increase in the total number of bicycle thefts from 3 to 4 (or +1). Of these, the persons who committed the thefts were identified in 2 cases (2018 – in 1). The clearance rate for this type of crime was 50% (2018 – 33.3% or +16.7%).
By territorial division, two bicycle thefts were committed in the city of Postavy and 2 thefts were committed in rural areas. In the city of Postavy - 2: Yubileynaya Street – 1 theft was committed from the entrance of an apartment building (unsolved), Zelenaya Street – 1 theft was committed from the entrance of an apartment building (unsolved). In rural areas, 2 bicycle thefts were committed: Kamaysky rural council, Verenki village - 1 bicycle theft was committed from the yard of a private house (suspect identified), Kuropolsky rural council, Kuropolye village - 1 bicycle theft was committed from the shed of a private house (suspect identified). As can be seen from the territorial division of the crimes committed, no system is observed; all crimes are scattered by location and committed in rural councils distant from each other.
By method of commission, only 3 incidents were committed by free access: Postavy, Yubileynaya Street (entrance), Postavy, Zelenaya Street (entrance), Verenki village (private house yard). 1 incident was committed by breaking into the shed of a private house in Kuropolye village, taking advantage of insufficient technical security.
Two thefts were committed in January, two thefts were committed in April 2019. By day of the week:
Monday-1;
Friday-2;
Saturday-1.
By time of commission, three thefts were committed from 19:00 to 06:00, 1 theft from 7:00 to 18:00.
We would like to recommend several simple but effective measures to bicycle owners to protect their property:
-do not leave your bicycle unattended on the stairwell, in basements, near entrances or shops
- mark the main parts of the bicycle, write down their numbers; this will help identify the bicycle in case of theft
- purchase a locking device to prevent bicycle theft and use it when leaving the bicycle for a short time.
Adherence to these minimal rules will prevent criminal encroachment against you and preserve your property.
