Bicycle theft prevention

Bicycle theft prevention

A bicycle is a rather valuable, yet often carelessly stored, possession. It is not uncommon for a two-wheeled friend to be left unattended or secured with a lock or cable that can be easily opened or broken. Malefactors take advantage of this carelessness and negligence. Bicycles are stolen either for resale or out of hooliganism.

Bicycles are extremely popular among residents of Postavy and the surrounding area, so the issue of preventing their theft is becoming increasingly relevant. The chances of recovering a stolen bicycle decrease if you are negligent in acquiring your vehicle. When buying a used bicycle, you should pay attention to its appearance – whether it has been repainted, if there are any defects or scratches. You also cannot be careless about having a passport for the bicycle; only with it can you be sure that you are not buying a stolen vehicle, and in case of theft, you can prove its purchase.

Keep all documents for the bicycle or at least photograph the frame's serial number, the bicycle itself, and remember its distinguishing features (accessories, stickers, scratches, etc.). This will significantly help in finding the bicycle if it is stolen and proving your ownership.
To avoid becoming a victim of theft, remember that a stairwell or entrance, even if locked, is not the best place to store a bicycle, even if it is secured. Pay close attention to safety measures when purchasing bicycle accessories. It is advisable to buy a thicker cable and one long enough to secure both wheels and the frame. The lock should be of good quality, with a strong shackle and impossible to open with improvised tools. Do not leave valuable items and easily removable parts of the bicycle. If possible, it is better to remove all accessories, even the saddle – such a bicycle will not attract attention and will be of less value to a malefactor.

Do not leave your vehicle in places where a malefactor can easily steal it. It should be within sight of surveillance cameras or in your direct view, and the bicycle should still be secured, even if you leave it for a short time.

Dear citizens! Never buy a bicycle without documents! Otherwise, you risk becoming the owner of a stolen means of transport. If unlawful actions have been committed against you or your property, immediately contact the police by calling 102.
