This
week, two toddlers fell out of open windows

Both incidents occurred on the same day – April 26, one in Baranovichi, the other in Mogilev. One child suffered a skull base fracture.

In one case, the child opened the window themselves (all circumstances are currently being investigated). In the second case, the child fell through a window left open for ventilation. In each of these cases, adults were present in the apartment but did not supervise the children and faced the consequences.

Just a few seconds are enough for such a tragedy. Therefore, do not leave windows open when children are present; you need to take care of locking mechanisms.

One 5-year-old child was admitted with a comminuted skull base fracture. A neurosurgeon explained the danger of such an injury.

"With a skull base fracture, there is a connection between the external environment and the cavity where the brain is located. And the child can develop meningitis and encephalitis. These are life-threatening diseases."

While bones usually heal with a bony callus, the skull heals with scar tissue, which resembles cartilage. This means that this child retains a lifelong risk of developing meningitis: any injury (and sometimes even without injury) can lead to serious consequences.

The second child (2 years and 3 months old) remains in extremely critical condition. He also fell from a third-story window.

"They continue to fight for his life. His condition is very serious. It is not yet possible to say that he survived. And this is only the third floor."

Another incident occurred in March, in Bykhov. A two-year-old child fell from the fifth floor: the mother came to visit with the toddler, left for a couple of minutes, and the boy climbed onto the sofa and opened the window. The child could not be saved.

Then a similar story happened in Baranovichi: a three-year-old child fell from a fourth-story window. The toddler was left unattended, climbed onto the sofa in the kitchen, and fell out of the open window.

In April, again in Baranovichi, a five-year-old boy fell from a fifth-story window. The mother went to the kitchen, during which time the child managed to find the locking device and open the window. In the same month, in Zhabinka, a two-year-old child left alone at home fell from a fifth-story window: he climbed onto a stool on the balcony and lost his balance.
