The Postavy District Museum of Local Lore is a visiting card of the city and district. Here you can comprehensively get acquainted with the history, culture, ethnography, and nature of the Postavy region.
The museum carries out the acquisition, storage of museum objects, study and popularization of historical and cultural heritage, material and spiritual culture, and teaches love for the native land.
The museum hosts many diverse events: excursions through museum expositions, the historical center of the city, museum quests, museum-pedagogical classes, exhibitions, meetings with interesting people, interactive games, presentations, round tables, car rallies, etc.
A public association "Living History" has been created at the museum.
Museum Buildings
The museum exposition is located in two buildings:
- "Hotel" — part of the architectural ensemble of the former Market Square, 1760–1780 (11/2 Lenin Square)
- "Former Tyzenhaus Palace Building", 1760 – 1930s (73 Sovetskaya Street)
Permanent Museum Exhibition (Lenin Square, 11/2)
Nature and Archaeology Section (1st floor of the museum)
- Exhibits include stuffed animals of forest, field, river, lake, and swamp inhabitants, providing an insight into the wildlife of our region. Here you can see many of its representatives and learn in detail about their life and behavior in their environment.
- The exhibition materials also introduce the geography and climate of the Postavy district, as well as its mineral resources.
- Archaeological finds from the 3rd – 2nd millennium BC – 1st millennium AD are presented: stone and iron axes, knives, awls, fragments of pottery, rattles, spearheads, women's jewelry, mammoth bones, etc.
History Section (2nd floor of the museum)
- The department's exhibition is an interesting complex of materials from the times of the Polotsk Principality until 1939. Among the exhibits are ancient dishes, maps, documents, photographs, books, interior and household items, tools, etc.
Ethnography Section (2nd floor of the museum)
- Interior of a Belarusian house from the 1940s–1950s, reflecting the traditional dwelling of rural inhabitants with a stove and household utensils: furniture, dishes, tools, household items, clothing, decorative and applied art objects.
New Museum Exhibition (Sovetskaya St., 73)
In 2014, thanks to Lithuanian-Belarusian cooperation and the support of the European Union, a new museum exhibition was opened in the cellars of the Tyzenhaus Palace in Postavy (Sovetskaya St., 73), reflecting unique pages from the history of Postavy.
The museum exhibition consists of the following sections:
- "Konstanty Tyzenhaus — a famous ornithologist"
Here visitors can learn in detail about the life and work of Count Konstanty Tyzenhaus. - Section "St. Petersburg Officer Cavalry School in Postavy"
Which tells about the presence of a branch (field department) of the St. Petersburg Cavalry School in Postavy at the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th centuries, located on the lands of Count Przezdziecki. - Section "World War I in Postavy Region"
Introduces museum visitors to the tragic events of World War I in the territory of Postavy region.
