What to do if a fire starts?
Unfortunately, people often start thinking about safety only when disaster strikes. That is why it is essential to know the basic rules of action in case of fire.
A small fire can be extinguished manually with a blanket or towel made of non-synthetic materials: cover the flame, cutting off the oxygen supply, and the fire will go out. A small fire can also be put out with water, but you must remember that under no circumstances should you pour water on electrical appliances connected to the mains or on burning oil.
- Call rescuers by phone 101 or 112 if you have not managed to extinguish the fire within 2-3 minutes, as further loss of time will lead to its spread.
Tell the dispatcher the address, the location of the fire, and report the presence of people in the building and the threat to nearby structures.
- Immediately leave the apartment or house. If possible, close the door to the burning room tightly – this will prevent the fire from spreading.
- Evacuate residents and neighbors. Help the elderly and minors.
- If possible, de-energize the house, turn off the gas if you live in a private sector.
- Meet the Ministry of Emergency Situations units, report if there are people left in the building, what is burning, and where it is burning.
If:
· you could not leave the dwelling – go out onto the balcony, attract the attention of passers-by;
· it is impossible to exit due to heavy smoke – seal door gaps with wet rags, preferably around the perimeter of the door – this will prevent smoke and high temperatures from spreading quickly throughout your apartment.
During a fire, you must not:
· panic;
· use the elevator;
· open windows (the influx of oxygen makes the fire burn even more intensely);
· return to the house (no matter how valuable you left in the dwelling, life is more precious);
· run if clothes catch fire, it is necessary to throw a blanket over the burning person.
