Protect nature!

Warm, sunny, and rainless summer days contribute to fires in forests and peatlands. The carelessness of citizens exacerbates the situation.

Since the beginning of the year, 8 forest fires have been extinguished in the Vitebsk region (Ushachy district – 1, Vitebsk district – 1, Orsha district – 1, Polotsk district – 4, Rossony district – 1) over a total area of 7.37 hectares.

In 90% of cases, human activity is the cause of forest and peat fires, in 9% equipment is to blame, and in only one case is the cause of the emergency natural (lightning, spontaneous combustion, etc.). This is why restrictions on visiting peatlands and forests are introduced. Often, it takes weeks to extinguish a peat fire. Peat and forest fires have one sad pattern: their number sharply increases after weekends. Campfires, unextinguished cigarette butts, and even arson – these are the results of our citizens' recreation in nature. Therefore, it would be useful to remember a few basic rules of conduct in the forest. First, know that campfires can only be lit in designated areas in the forest. When leaving, carefully cover the fire with earth or pour water over it until it completely stops smoldering. Do not throw unextinguished matches and cigarette butts. Do not leave rags soaked in gasoline or oil. Do not refuel a car in the forest with the engine running. Do not leave empty cans and bottles, or broken glass.

If you find yourself in a burning forest, immediately warn people nearby and organize their exit from the dangerous area. You should move to a road or clearing, to a wide glade, to the bank of a river or lake, or to a field. Move as quickly as possible, perpendicular to the direction of the fire. If it is impossible to escape the flames, enter a body of water or cover yourself with wet clothing. Once in an open space, breathe air near the ground, covering your mouth and nose with a scarf, handkerchief, or cloth.

Report the incident to the rescue service by calling 101.
