Lithuanian parliament's resolution on Belarusian nuclear power plant branded as politically biased

The Lithuanian parliament's resolution on the safety of the Belarusian nuclear power plant is yet another attempt to interfere in Belarus' domestic affairs and contributes to growing tensions in interstate relations, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Energy Ministry.

According to the source, the document aims to achieve purely political goals. The safety of the Belarusian nuclear power plant has become a matter of constant speculations for certain political forces in Lithuania, an opportunity to “score points” in favor of their own interests. For this purpose they paint the picture of Belarus as a threat to nuclear safety in Europe, the source said.

The Belarusian Energy Ministry believes that most of the complaints voiced by the Lithuanian side rely on speculations, contain no sound arguments, and even contain false information in some cases. In particular, the resolution says that nuclear fuel was loaded into the first reactor of the Belarusian nuclear power plant without a permission of the regulatory authority. It also mentions some illegal works and irresponsible development of the nuclear energy industry, which is false. “We expect that the international community can objectively evaluate the situation and will disregard such clearly politically biased and unsubstantiated evaluations of the Lithuanian side,” the Energy Ministry said.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is being built in compliance with all the necessary safety and security requirements. The fact has been repeatedly confirmed by International Atomic Energy Agency missions, evaluations of other respected international organizations, with which Belarus constantly cooperates, the Energy Ministry stated.
